Caltech Housing Cat/Pet Policy
In
order to house a cat, Resident must complete a Cat Application Form
with the Caltech Housing Office and be granted permission by the
Assistant Director of Housing for Occupancy and Billing to keep the
cat specified under the following terms and conditions:
a.
A maximum of two (2) cats are allowed per each of the
following Caltech Undergraduate Houses, Ruddock, Lloyd, Page,
Blacker, Dabney, Fleming and Ricketts. These cats will be
restricted to a designated alley in each of the seven houses listed
above. Cats are not allowed in Avery, Marks, Braun, off-campus
alleys or any other undergraduate off-campus Caltech Housing.
b.
A maximum of two (2) cats per resident at 250/252 Catalina
will be allowed. Cats are not allowed in any other graduate or
postdoc housing.
c.
The cat(s) must not be kept, bred, or used for any commercial
purpose.
d.
The cat(s) must be sterilized before moving into the housing
unit. Written proof from a veterinarian must be furnished to the
Caltech Housing Office with the Cat Application Form. The cat(s)
must be licensed and up to date with rabies and other vaccinations
including feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency
virus (FIV). Written proof must be furnished to the Caltech Housing
Office.
e.
The cat(s) must be on a long-term flea preventative program
(such as Advantage®, Program®, Frontline®,
or weekly applications of spray or powder flea treatments – refer to
your veterinarian for more information) and a single, recent receipt
for a flea medication must be provided to the Caltech Housing Office
to confirm that the cat(s) is currently on flea medication.
f.
The Resident will provide adequate and regular veterinary
care for the cat(s), as well as ample food and water, and will not
leave the cat(s) unattended for any undue length of time. If
Resident must leave or travel away from his/her unit for more than
three (3) days, he/she must leave the cat(s) in the care of a
responsible party and said party must be known as the Emergency
Caretaker identified to the Caltech Housing Office on the Cat
Application Form. Cats must not be left outside or left unattended.
g.
The cat(s) must be housetrained. Only indoor house cats are
permitted in Caltech Housing.
h.
The cat(s) must wear a collar with up-to-date identification
of the cat’s name and the owner’s contact information at all times.
The Caltech Housing Office will provide an additional tag for the
cat’s collar with “Caltech” and an identification number on it that
should also be worn for emergency purposes. The ID number will be
associated with the Cat Application Form.
i.
The cat(s) will be allowed out of the cat owner’s unit only
under the complete control of a responsible human companion and on a
hand-held leash or in a cat carrier. Free roaming or unaccompanied
cats are not allowed outside a Resident’s unit. Persons who walk
the cat(s) are responsible for immediately cleaning up after the
cat(s) and discarding securely bagged cat droppings in approved
waste containers. No cat waste or used litter may be discarded in
Housing trash facilities unless securely double bagged.
j.
Resident will diligently maintain cleanliness of litter boxes
as well as cat(s) sleeping and feeding areas.
k.
Caltech laundry facilities are not to be used for cleaning
cat bedding or toys. Cat items needing to be laundered should be
taken to a facility that provides these laundry services.
l.
No cat(s) shall be allowed to become a nuisance or create any
unreasonable disturbance. Examples of nuisance behavior include,
but are not limited to, the following:
i.
Cats whose unruly behavior causes personal injury or property
damage.
ii.
Cats that make noise continuously and/or incessantly for a
period of thirty minutes or intermittently for 2 hours or more to
the disturbance of any person at any time of day or night.
iii.
Cats outside the Resident’s unit who are not under the
complete physical control of a responsible human companion and on a
hand-held leash of no more than six feet in length or in a cat
carrier.
iv.
Cats that relieve themselves on walls or floors of common
areas.
v.
Cats that exhibit aggressive or other dangerous or
potentially dangerous behavior.
vi.
Cats that are conspicuously unclean or parasite infested.
m.
A non-refundable fee of $200.00 per cat will be paid to the
Caltech Housing Office to off-set any normal damage to the exterior
or interior of the premises, grounds, flooring, walls, trim, finish,
tiles, carpeting, or any stains, etc., caused by the cat(s). It is
the full financial responsibility of the Resident to pay for all
costs involved in the restoration of the property to its original
condition, should the costs exceed $200.00. If any damages are such
that it cannot be restored, then Resident hereby agrees to pay the
full expense of replacement, should the cost exceed $200.00.
i. The fee of
$200.00 will only need to be paid once, upon bringing the cat(s)
into Caltech Housing. The Resident will not be charged this fee on a yearly basis, unless
the Resident switches to a different housing
unit.
ii. In cases
of flea infestations caused by a cat, the Resident will permit the
Caltech Housing Office to professionally treat the premises,
including grounds (if any), for the fleas and ticks, when Resident vacates the
premises. The contractors used will be the Caltech Housing Office’s
contractors, and the cost will be competitive and borne by the Resident.
n.
If there is reasonable cause to believe an emergency
situation exists with respect to a cat, and if efforts to contact
the Resident and emergency caretakers are unsuccessful, the Caltech
Housing Office or its agents may contact the Caltech Animal Team
(CAT) and/or local animal control authority and assist its staff in
entering the Resident’s housing unit. Examples of an emergency
situation include suspected abuse, abandonment, fire or other
disaster, or any prolonged disturbance. If it becomes necessary for
the cat(s) to be boarded, any and all costs incurred will be the
sole responsibility of the Resident.
Should a cat or cat owner be found to
violate any of the above, the following actions may be taken:
o.
On first violation, the cat owner will be warned either by
CAT or the Caltech Housing Office.
p.
Successive violations will result in the immediate removal of
the cat(s) at the sole expense of the owner.
If a Resident does not submit a
Cat Application Form for
their cat(s) living in Caltech Housing and receive permission to
house the cat, the Resident will be charged an additional $200.00
fee for not complying with the Caltech Housing Cat Policy. In
addition, the Resident will be required to remove the cat
immediately or risk removal from Caltech Housing.
Other
Pets
Residents are not permitted to maintain pets
except those permanently and appropriately housed in a twenty (20)
gallon aquarium, terrarium or smaller. Resident shall not maintain
pets that are prohibited by law, including the Zoning Ordinance of
the City of Pasadena. Birds and dogs are not allowed.
Resident agrees to the following terms
and conditions if they wish to maintain an approved pet:
a. Free roaming or unaccompanied pet(s) are
not allowed outside a Resident’s unit. No pet waste or used litter
may be discarded in Housing trash facilities unless securely double
bagged.
b.
Resident will diligently maintain

c. No pet(s) shall be allowed to become a
nuisance or create any unreasonable disturbance. Examples of

control authority and assist its staff in entering the Resident’s

abuse, abandonment, fire or other disaster, or any prolonged
disturbance. If it becomes necessary for the pet(s) to be boarded,
any and all costs incurred will be the sole responsibility of the
Resident.
