Eligibility Requirements and Application Procedures for Newly Admitted Graduate Students

The Caltech Housing Office is now accepting applications for on-campus housing from students who have been admitted to graduate study for the 2008-2009 academic year. New student housing applications are accepted only from newly admitted Graduate Students for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Special Graduate Students or Visiting Graduate Students should apply for available housing options by submitting the Guest Housing Application.

Newly admitted graduate students have priority to receive on-campus housing in the Catalina Apartments or Avery House their first year at Caltech. To be guaranteed a housing assignment, new students without children must indicate at least two eligible housing options on the application form and submit it online by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008. New student housing applications received after the application deadline will be accepted and assigned on a space available basis in order of date received.

New students with children are eligible only for the two-bedroom apartments and are also encouraged to apply for the off-campus Caltech Lease Property two-bedroom units. For more information and to apply, please see the Lease property information and application.

Single new students with non-Caltech domestic partners are eligible only for the Catalina one-bedroom apartments. Students in this category cannot be guaranteed on-campus housing but are assigned whenever possible on a space available basis after all married couples and Caltech domestic couples have been placed. These students may also apply for the off-campus Caltech-owned Lease Properties. For more information and to apply, please see the Lease property information and application.

Housing Contracts and Room Assignment Information

Please do not apply for Caltech housing with the intention of receiving only temporary housing. The housing contract period is from September 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009.

A minimum of fifteen days notice is required for any contract cancellation; you will also incur a $300.00 cancellation fee. If fifteen days notice is not given, the cancellation fee will be $500.00. Release from the contract without a cancellation fee is granted only in the case of graduation, academic withdrawal, a leave of absence from the Institute, marriage, or when transferring to other Caltech-owned student housing. Residents may be released from the housing contract for any reason without a cancellation fee during the summer months only by providing the Housing Office with a minimum of fifteen (15) days written notice.

A confirmation of your housing reservation or waiting list status will be sent via e-mail by the end of May 2008. Please indicate any e-mail or postal addresses effective for the months of May - June on the application form and notify the Housing Office of any changes.

Specific room, apartment and apartment mate assignments are made during the summer months and will not be available until your arrival. Please do not contact the Housing Office during the summer requesting an exact assignment because that information is subject to change and cannot be provided.

Although new students who apply by the application deadline will receive a housing assignment, not all first preferences can always be met. Room move requests prior to October cannot be granted.  Room change requests are honored during the "Grad Room Move Period" in October and then throughout the year whenever possible, however a cleaning fee for any room change may apply.
