Housing Mission Statement and Policy
The Housing Office furthers the goals of Caltech by providing convenient, attractive housing. To this end, the Housing Office guarantees housing for all undergraduate students and all first year graduate students who apply by the deadlines. After these guarantees, the first priority of Housing is to provide temporary furnished and unfurnished housing for Moore Scholars, visiting professors and other short-term faculty and research and/or academic related visitors to the Institute. The second priority is to provide transitional housing for recruitment purposes of faculty. The third priority is to provide transitional housing for newly hired postdoctoral fellows and limited housing for graduate students with families. These rentals are managed by the Housing Office in accordance with these priorities and the current needs of the Institute.
All Undergraduate Housing rooms are furnished with a
desk, desk chair and a bed for each resident. Additional furniture is
described in individual sections below. All housing units also have internet
service, with direct CITNET connections at Avery, and Marks, Earthlink
DSL connections at 1170 E. Del Mar, and Charter pipeline cable modem connections
at 150 S. Chester and the off-campus houses.
Avery House is the newest housing facility at
Caltech. There are 24 singles, 41 doubles and 2 triples available for undergraduate
students. The entire building is air conditioned, and is wired to the
Campus Internet. Each room has additional dressers and wardrobes for clothing
storage. The building construction also meets ADA wheelchair requirements.
The residential areas are secured via use of card access
security. The House has several lounges, each housing a kitchen, dining
area and a fireplace, as well as the Lorden Lounge, which has a piano
available for recreational playing. There are two laundry rooms, each
featuring machines that accept both coins and ID card student account
transactions.
Students with on-campus extensions can maintain their
services at Avery House by completing a
telephone service request form.
Cats are not permitted in Avery House.
Pets permanently housed in enclosed containers, such as aquarium fish,
hamsters, etc., are permitted.
Avery residents living in a double or triple room
as a single will be charged a singles surcharge. The rate is
$5.00/day for occupying a double room as a single, $5.00/day for occupying
a triple room as a double, and $10.00/day for occupying a triple room as a single. There is a 30-day grace period after
a resident moves out for the remaining roommate to attempt to resolve
the vacancy situation, after which the surcharge will apply if left unresolved.
There is a Resident
Associate on duty in Avery House.
Marks/Braun House
Marks House has 28 single units, and
features slightly larger single rooms than those in the South Houses. The House

cable service.
Braun House has 30 single units, and

cable service.

services at Marks House by completing a
telephone service request form..

housed in enclosed containers, such as aquarium fish, hamsters, etc.,
are permitted.
There is a Resident

The Housing office offers apartment style
living, allowing easy access use of kitchen facilities and favorable bathroom
conditions. There are 24 one bedroom units available at 150 S. Chester,
each rated for two to three residents, with only minor variations in unit design.
There are nine units available in the 1170 E. Del Mar Apartments, rated
for one to two residents for studio units (2 available), two to three
residents for one bedroom
units (2 available) and four residents for two bedroom units (5 available).
In addition to standard furnishings, there is a living
room with a dining table, dining chairs and a couch in each unit. The
kitchen is equipped a gas range, refrigerator, stove and microwave oven
(but no cooking utensils.) Laundry facilities are available in the apartments
by coin operation only. Each Apartment has a manager and/or Resident
Associate on duty.
Each apartment building has a pool in the central
courtyard, and a community gas barbecue.
Internet connection is available in both buildings,
via the Charter Pipeline
service at 150 S. Chester and Earthlink DSL connections at 1170 E. Del
Mar. For information on system settings for cable modems, please refer
to the ITS instructions for the
Macintosh,
Windows 95 or
Windows NT.
Personal campus extensions are not available
in the apartments. Residents must contract with
AT&T to start the telephone service by calling their toll free number,
1-800-310-2355.
Cats are not permitted in the apartments. Pets permanently
housed in enclosed containers, such as aquarium fish, hamsters, etc.,
are permitted.
If you are considering selecting an apartment, UNDERSTAND
THE LEASE!
The apartment lease differs greatly from
the dorm contract for other housing areas. The Institute
rents the entire apartment unit as one rental, thus if a resident moves
out, the remaining resident(s) will be responsible for the entire rent of the
apartment. The housing office provides a 30 day grace period to resolve
the vacancy. If after 30 days subsequent to the check-out of a resident,
the bed space is not filled, the entire rent will be levied to the remaining
resident(s.) For example, if a student moves out of 150 S. Chester, the
remaining resident will have 30 days to either fill the space, or move
into another housing space. Otherwise, starting the 30th day, the remaining
resident will be charged the entire monthly rent to stay in that apartment.
